THE CHEMUNG COUNTY SPCA NEEDS YOUR HELP TO MEET FUNDRAISING GOAL

 Published: Aug. 4, 2010

The Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA announced on Wednesday, July 28 at its annual open board meeting that it has raised just 27 percent of its fundraising goal of $375,000 for 2010. At this time last year, the shelter had raised 46 percent of its fundraising goal of $350,000. This means that the organization is at least a quarter behind its fundraising schedule for the year and may have to cut programs and services, like the hours it is open to the public and the number of animals it can take in, if the goal is not met.

"We have cut costs as far back as we can without jeopardizing the quality of care for the animals," said Barbara McLean, Executive Director of the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA. "Once again, we have to turn to the community for support to keep our programs and services strong and keep our doors open for the sake of the homeless, abandoned and abused animals of the area."

PROCTOR & GAMBLE PET FOOD RECALL HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO DOG AND CAT PRODUCTS

Published: Aug. 3, 2010

Pet food recall expanded on Procter & Gamble. The recall involving Procter & Gamble pet food has expanded to dog and cat products. The pet food could be contaminated by Salmonella, which has expanded the recall.

There is a possibility that some of the dry pet food could be contaminated by salmonella. The following pet foods should be checked as part of this recall:

1. Iams Veterniary Dry, Formulas, all sizes and varieties
2. Eukanuba Naturally Wild, all sizes and varieties.
3. Eukanuba Pure, all sizes and varieties
4. Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin, all dry sizes

All of these products are sold in veterinary clinics, and pet store retailers in the U.S. and Canada. By calling 1-877-340-8823 you can receive a replacement or refund. Procter & Gamble pet food is advising purchasers to discard the affected products because people who handle the food could become infected.

Signs of being infected include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Contact your medical doctor immediately if you have these symptoms. Pets who have become infected due to the food recall mirror the signs of their adult counter-parts. Observe your pet and look for these signs. In addition, pets may have a decrease in appetite. Pets who are left untreated may become lethargic, vomit and have diarrhea.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PET SAFE IN THE SUMMER HEAT

Published: July 7, 2010

Keeping Your Pets Cool

  1. Do not under any circumstance leave your dog in the car. It can turn into an oven in a matter of minutes. Please just leave your dog at home either in the air conditioning or with plenty of shade and water.
  2. If at all possible, bring your pets inside to enjoy the air conditioning.
  3. Make sure they have plenty of fresh, cool, not cold, water-ice water can actually cause cells to constrict.
  4. If your pet is outside, make sure they have plenty of shade and fresh, cool water that is changed often.
  5. A quick spray with the hose for dogs can help cool them down.
  6. Try to restrict activity, i.e. don't take your dog for a long run in the intense heat.
  7. Be careful of paws and hot cement or pavement. Even though these areas are considered tough, they can still burn easily in extreme temperatures.
  8. Watch out for sunburns on lighter skinned dogs. There are dog-specific sunscreens available.
  9. Be aware of flies and biting insects during the hot weather. Your pets are especially susceptible to bites on their ears and injured areas. There are dog-safe bug sprays available.

If you see animals left outside without adequate water or shelter, or left in cars, don't hesitate to call the Chemung County SPCA at 607-732-1827. Check with your veterinarian for more details on keeping your pet safe in the heat.

Signs of Heat Stroke

  • Excessive panting
  • Temperatures higher than 104-110F
  • Dark or bright red gums and tongue
  • Pale gums signify shock-- immediate action must be taken
  • Sticky, dry gums or tongue
  • Seizures, staggering or stupor
  • Bloody diarrhea or vomiting

If you see any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian immediately. Quick action is the key to insuring a happy outcome.

'TIS THE SEASON-KITTEN SEASON THAT IS!
Published: June 25, 2010

It is kitten season at the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA and the shelter is offering some great adoption promotions on shelter cats for a limited time! The shelter is offering a two-"fur"-one deal on all spayed or neutered kittens (a pair of un-spayed or un-neutered kittens requires an additional refundable $35 deposit) and a 50 percent discount on all spayed or neutered adult cats one year and older with an approved adoption application.

"We are in a real crunch for space right now due to kitten season and have more than 150 cats in our care, both in foster homes and in the shelter," said Leanne Falkingham, Animal Behavior, Outreach and Training Manager. "Kittens do really well in pairs and will become friends for life if they grow up together so this special will not only benefit the adopters but the kittens as well."

Cats are regularly $50. With this promotion, a pair of spayed or neutered kittens is $50, while a pair of un-spayed or un-neutered kittens would be adoptable for $85, with a refundable $35 deposit. Spayed and neutered adult cats are only $25! If you've been thinking of adding a cat or two to your family, now would be the "purrfect" time!
