STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. -- Some fourth grade students at Erwin Valley Elementary School have used their writing skills to help a good cause.
The students had an assignment to write a business letter, but instead of writing to a fake company, they wrote to real businesses on behalf of the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA. They used the SPCA's wish list and asked the companies for donations. Much to their surprise, some of the students have received responses and successfully acquired donations such as toys, cleaning products and gift cards.
"I want the dogs over at the SPCA to be happy and to have fun," said Cashtian Griswold.
"It's so helpful in maintaining the level of care that we want to have for the animals. Not only in some just basic products in helping to feed them and keep the shelter clean, but things that they can do that enriches their lives while they're with us," said Barbara McLean, Executive Director of the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA.
One of the teachers says she plans to do this lesson again in the future and help another local organization.
