Little Voices Can Make a Big Difference

3/29/2010 1:00:00 AM

PAINTED POST - A few weeks ago, a box of rawhide bones were delivered to the Chemung County SPCA.  "We had no idea where it came from," said Barbara Mclean, Executive Director of the Chemung County SPCA.
The rawhides were sent from the people at the "Pet Factory" after they received a letter from Cashtian Giswold, a 4th grader at Erwin Valley Elementary School in Painted Post.  "I wanted the dogs to be happy with rawhide chews," said Cashtian.
"We were doing a business letter as one of our writing concepts," explained Caterina Summa, a 4th grade teacher at Erwin Valley.  "We thought it would be a great idea to write to actual businesses to help our local SPCA."
All 63 4th graders at Erwin Valley wrote letters to different businesses asking for donations.  Since then things like rawhides, Kongs, gift cards and cleaning supplies have been rolling in.  These kids know they're making a difference.
"I think it's a wonderful because I'm taking part of something that will make animals feel good and make them love more be loved more," said 4th grader Dominique Gunn.
"It feels good," said 4th grader Connie Hou, "because you know that they need help."
"It feels good because you know that you're doing the right thing," explained 4th grader Ivan Jubilee.
And for Cashtian the right thing was to get the dogs rawhide chews, "with one person at a time we can help support America and dogs."
This is the first year the 4th grade teachers at Erwin Valley have assigned this lesson.  They hope to continue it in the future for different organizations in need.
